Piney Ridge Lodge is recognized as one of the most beautiful resorts in the Brainerd Lakes Area. The area has been a mecca for recreational activities since the logging days of the late 1880s. The Whitefish Chain of fourteen lakes was created by the loggers to allow for the movement of logs from lake to lake and ultimately down the Pine River to the Mississippi. The result is a system of connected lakes that simply could not be reproduced today. Each lake is unique with its own distinct characteristics. You can travel all day and never see the same vista. 

Since the logging days people seeking peace and quiet in the great outdoors have flocked to ths area. Surrounded by lakes and woods with abundant fish and game the resort businesses flourished. Piney Ridge was born when Effie Palmer was asked by a group of fishermen, who had rowed over to the piney ridge on the north shore of Upper Whitefish from Indian Island, if she could cook a shore lunch. After lunch she was asked if she would rent a room to the fishermen when they returned the following year. Life at Piney Ridge was never the same again.

In 1911, Effie and her husband, Frank, began doing business as Piney Ridge Lodge. They catered to people seeking to enjoy life on the Whitefish Chain. Life was simpler then and the easy summer pace and Effie's fine cooking and the special treats from her garden soon began to draw people from around the country. Many of her guests came from the South to escape the stifling heat and enjoy the cool summer evenings of Minnesota.

Even though we have all the amenities of a fine resort, we have tried to maintain the simple life that made Effie's kitchen and resort a haven from the hectic world we live in today.
